A visionary leap into the future

In 1998, five digital visionaries – Thomas Albert, Jakob Christensen, Peter Christensen, Ole Thrane, and Michael Seifert – established Pentia A/S, a systems integration company specializing in crafting websites using Microsoft’s cutting-edge technologies. After developing countless websites, Thrane decided to write a script to automate the process. In doing so, he created what would become Sitecore’s first code.

It wasn’t long before the team shifted their efforts to creating a solution that would enable digital marketers to create content and campaigns without heavy reliance on developers. The following year, an early version of Sitecore was launched. By 2001, the formation of Sitecore Corporation, helmed by Seifert as CEO, marked the dawn of a new era in the CMS landscape, with Sitecore rapidly emerging as a formidable force.

Charting the course for global growth

Sitecore’s journey to international prominence began with the establishment of offices in Copenhagen and Ukraine in 2002. Yet, it was our pioneering move into the US market that distinguished us from our Danish peers.

From the outset, Sitecore embraced English for all software and documentation, a deliberate choice that propelled our expansion into the US in 2004, the UK in 2005, and Australia in 2007.

However, our strategic vision extended beyond language and international borders. In a landscape dominated by static HTML, Sitecore championed dynamic content delivery, setting the stage for our ascent as the leading digital experience platform.

The evolution of web content management

We observed the rise of social media, marketing analytics, and automation. These were disparate systems and challenging to integrate. Sitecore’s ambition was to unify them.

Our path was one of innovation–to construct an interconnected platform from scratch.

The endeavor was daunting, and skepticism was rife, but our perseverance prevailed. Two years on, we launched Sitecore’s first digital experience platform. This platform centralized visitor data, enabling personalized digital interactions and laying the groundwork for the Sitecore Experience Platform™ we know today.

Sitecore’s global footprint

As our technology evolved, so too did our global footprint. Post-Australia in 2007, we expanded to the Netherlands and Sweden in 2008, Japan in 2009, Canada and Germany in 2010, Singapore and France in 2012, and further into Belgium, Malaysia, China, and Indonesia in 2015, Hong Kong in 2016, and the Middle East and India in 2017. In 2021, we entered the market in Greece.

Sitecore’s continued evolution

Since 2018, Sitecore has expanded its digital capabilities, adding digital asset management and AI-powered recommendations for website search, intelligent decisioning and advanced A/B testing in personalization, and image recognition in digital asset management. 2026 marks Sitecore's 25th anniversary and our latest innovation, SitecoreAI, brings content, data, and personalization together with AI built into the workflows that marketers use every day. The platform is open and extensible through Sitecore Studio, where teams build and deploy AI agents, custom apps, and integrations, with reusable extensions available through Marketplace.

Trusted by thousands of global brands and supported by one of the world’s largest digital experience communities, Sitecore has put our customers at the center of the experience for 25 years. In 2026 and beyond, we're continuing to focus on helping organizations run their operations, expand their presence, and drive their outcomes at the speed and scale the AI era demands.
